I have had a hard time putting together my resolutions for this year. I have taken the 17 days of 2018 that have already passed to think about who and where I am, as well as who and where I expect to be in 5 years. But even that made me want to give myself tens of goals to reach this year, something I would have failed at.
I couldn’t figure it out so I delayed this post. Now, it’s half after midnight, I am unable to fall asleep and I’m composing my first blog post of the year 2018.
Last year, I tried to scrap the idea of a new years resolution but found out that the different resolutions we make are the steps we hope to take towards our goals.
This year, I’m sticking to a theme inspired by Henry David Thoreau’s quote,
Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined. As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler.
Resolutions are aimed at helping us reach goals we aim for and whether it’s working out for the goal of looking and feeling good, or reading more to be more knowledgeable, each of us sets our resolutions to align with our dreams.
My dream is to be a well-traveled journalist with a command of multiple languages, so my resolutions for 2018 have been set with that in mind. They are fewer than what I usually set for myself, but they are important enough to be critical to my final goal. Here they are:
- Learn both French and Spanish properly and move beyond my current proficiencies in both
- Visit 1 new city and 1 new country
- Communicate clearly and more often
- Improve financial habits and knowledge
- Put more work into this blog
- Write everyday
It took me 2 weeks to come up with these resolutions so don’t let anyone rush you into setting goals for yourself when you are not ready. Even if it takes you until June to figure it out, remember that you are not competing with anybody. Resolutions are only meant to help create the best version of you.
